Development of Optic Coherence Tomography Device for Contact Lens Inspection

Abstract

|
Purpose: Visual inspection using an contact lens analyzer is carried out to inspect defective contact lenses that occur in the manufacturing process of contact lenses. However, visual inspections of contact lens analyzer are difficult to identify internal defects in contact lenses. Therefore, in this study, by using Optic Coherence Tomography (OCT), images of 3D contact lenses were acquired, so that it is was possible to inspect not only the surface but also the internal defects.
Methods: We fabricated a non-destructive OCT system using a 20 mW light source with a swept source wavelength of 1310 nm and a balanced optical receiver with a Balanced Photoreceiver DC-80 MHz and 900-1700 nm for contact lens measurement. 300 defective contact lenses were measured with a contact lens analyzer and OCT, respectively. To reduce the error, the measurement time was measured within 5 seconds for each sample, and was repeated three times per sample.
Results: The results were compared with contact lens analyzer and OCT, Edge defects that can be identified with the naked eye were measured similarly, but if the surface scratches and internal bubbles or visual difficulties were difficult to observe them, it was difficult to observe with contact lens analyzer but could be confirmed with OCT.
Conclusions: At present, most contact lens manufacturers conduct visual inspections using a contact lens analyzer when
measuring defects, but they are inefficient and inaccurate. In this study, we developed OCT equipment and examined contact lens defects which can not be detected by contact lens analyzer. It is expected that the efficiency and accuracy of inspection will be improved through automation in the future.
